Cook time: 50 minutes
Total time: 1 hour
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp salted butter
- 2 shallots, thinly sliced
- 12 oz breakfast sausage links, sliced
- 10 eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 1 tbsp dijon
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp freshly cracked black pepper
- 8 large croissants, torn into large pieces
- 1 ½ cups shredded gruyere
- Chopped chives, to serve - optional
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the butter. Once melted, add the shallot and saute for about 1-2 minutes.
- Add the sausage and continue to saute for about 3-5 minutes or until the sausage has lightly browned and the shallot is soft and caramelized. Remove from the heat and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, dijon, salt, and pepper until combined.
- Layer half of the torn croissants into the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the egg mixture over the croissants, followed by sprinkling half of the gruyere over the top. Scatter half of the sausage and shallot mixture over the cheese.
- Repeat with the remaining croissants, egg mixture, gruyere, and sausage.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes or until the strata has completely set. Check on the strata at the 30 minute mark to make sure it’s not browning too quickly on top. If it is, cover with a piece of foil.
- Let cool for about 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving. Garnish with freshly chopped chives if desired and enjoy!
